Program

 

DAY 1: TUNIS

In the morning we will visit contemporary Jewish sites in Tunis, including two active synagogues and a fa- cility where the community takes care of its elderly members. We will also see where the Jewish commu- nity used to live before the emigration, including synagogues that had to be abandoned. In the afternoon we will have a walking tour of general sites in Tunis, including the medina.

DAY 2: TUNIS

In the morning we will visit the famous Bardo Museum which houses an incredible collection of material from the Roman and Islamic eras. In the afternoon we will walk the streets of Sidi Bou Said—near ancient Carthage—famous for its blue and white houses and cobblestone streets. We will then visit the North Africa American Cemetery and Memorial, a moving site that also includes the graves of Jewish servicemen who made the ultimate sacrifice.

DAY 3: TUNIS, SFAX

In the morning we travel to Kairouan, which in medieval times was an important Jewish community
with great rabbinic figures. While the Jewish community no longer exists, we will be able to admire
the wonderful Islamic architecture and historical sites of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the afternoon we will visit El Jem where we will see another UNESCO World Heritage Site, the famous amphitheatre which dates from the third century CE and is one of the best preserved Roman-era sites in the world. We will end our day with a visit to the synagogue in Sfax, whose Jewish community continues to function.

DAY 4: SFAX, DJERBA

In the morning we drive to Djerba where after lunch we will have a short walking tour of Djerba–now a
popular European tourist destination–and then prepare for Shabbat.

DAY 5: SHABBAT, DJERBA

Shabbat will be spent among the Jewish community of Djerba, an experience unlike any other.

DAY 6: DJERBA, TOZEUR

We will visit the famous El Ghriba Synagogue of Djerba, a pilgrimage site for Jews all over the world. We will also see the market, where many Jews have their shops, and the boys and girls schools, where Torah is taught in accord with the special Djerba approach. In the afternoon we travel to Tozeur, on the edge of the Sahara desert.

DAY 7: TOZEUR, DJERBA

Today we experience life in the Sahara, where amidst the magnificent scenery one will find canyons, oases, date palms, and of course camels. It is here that a number of scenes from Star Wars were shot.

DAY 8: DJERBA

We return to Djerba with a stop in Matmata in order to see the famous Berber cave dwellings. (Jews also once dwelled in such caves.) We then drive to Zarzis, near Djerba, where an active Jewish community with a beautiful synagogue still exists.

DAY 9: DJERBA

DJERBA Breakfast, return home.

DAY 1: TUNIS

Land in tunis the capital, visit the big active synagogue, then the Jewish cemetery where big rabbis are buried as רבי חי טייב לא מת.
After that, visit el Medina (the old market), take a lunch break then discover SIDI BOU SAID and head to the airport to fly to djerba to sleep.

DAY 2: DJERBA

Visit EL GHRIBA SYNAGOGUE (2000 years old) , tour djerbahood (street art)
Then visit the souq (market of Jews and Muslims together) and eat in a kosher restaurant there
Later in the afternoon visit the Jewish town and discover the preparation for Shabbat.

DAY 3: DJERBA

Shabbat inside the Jewish town it’s an experience that you can never forget.

DAY 4: DJERBA, TATOUIN

Travel more to the south to Tataouin where you can find the Berber granaries and see how they still live in their traditional way in Chenini then on the way back to djerba you discover the other Jewish town of zarzis and its’ beautiful active synagogue then spend the night in djerba.

Day 1

After that, visit el Medina (the old market), take a lunch break then discover SIDI BOU SAID and head to the airport to fly to djerba to sleep.

Day 2

Friday visit EL GHRIBA SYNAGOGUE (2000 years old) , tour djerbahood (street art)
Then visit the souq (market of Jews and Muslims together) and eat in a kosher restaurant there
Later in the afternoon visit the Jewish town and discover the preparation for Shabbat

Day 4

Sunday travel more to the south to Tataouin where you can find the Berber granaries and see how they still live in their traditional way in Chenini then head to the(Ksar Ghilan) desert and natural spring inside where you can swim and sleep inside the desert.

Day 5

Monday on the way back to djerba we visit Matmata where all the houses are troglodytes and parts of the « star wars movie » was filmed there after this we visit another Jewish town in Zarzis and their beautiful synagogue and spend the night in djerba.

Head to beautiful island of djerba

Then visit the souq (market of Jews and Muslims together) and eat in a kosher restaurant there.

Day 5

discover the Jewish town of djerba and it’s synagogues,בית המדרש and its seminar etc, then have lunch and head to the airport back home.

Head south to kairouan where the oldest mosque in North Africa is found (1100 years old)
Then go to Eljem and visit the Roman amphitheater (the 3rd biggest in the world) with a lunch stop there
After this we must visit קבר הצדיק רבי יוסף המערבי תלמיד האריז״ל הקדוש in Elhamma and sleep the night in djerba.
